Built for the City. Dressed for the Field. — Nike Wmns SF Air Force 1 Triple Black

    IKNO / DESIGN & CULTURE / ARCHIVE SPOTLIGHT · 6 October 2026

The Nike Wmns SF Air Force 1 High “Triple Black” takes a familiar foundation and builds upward. The result is an Air Force 1 with a completely different presence.

Start at the ground and the shape is familiar: the broad sole, the rounded toe, the perforations, the Swoosh. Then your eye moves up. The collar keeps climbing. Two substantial straps interrupt the lacing. A buckle becomes a focal point. In black, those details read through texture and shadow instead of colour.

That is what makes this pair worth revisiting. Its drama comes from construction. You do not need a bright palette to notice what has changed.

A familiar sole. A new proportion.

The Special Field Air Force 1 family emerged in 2016 under Nike designer Ben Kirschner. It brought the AF1 into conversation with Nike’s Special Field Boot, extending the upper while retaining the recognizable Air Force 1 foundation. Contemporary design coverage documents that meeting of sneaker and boot.

Here, the relationship is visible in the proportions. The sole anchors the shoe horizontally; the collar introduces a strong vertical line. The straps create two further bands across that upper. Look at it as a piece of design and it becomes a study in how far you can stretch a silhouette while keeping its identity legible.

Actual product image supplied by House of Sneakers. The double-strapped profile defines the SF silhouette.

    Black makes the hardware speak.

A monochrome upper puts the emphasis on edges: the stitching around the toe, the curve of the Swoosh, the layered collar and the contrast between smooth panels and woven straps. The buckle adds a harder, geometric shape to a shoe built from curves.

The effect is controlled but assertive. This is our visual reading of the pair, rather than a claim about military performance. Its appeal sits in that tension between everyday sneaker familiarity and the language of utility.

Made by hand, before the sketch.

In his interview with GOAT’s GREATEST, Kirschner describes a process rooted in making physical models. He says the SF AF1 was one of the projects he developed without an initial sketch. That is a useful way to understand this shoe: as an idea worked out through materials, patterns and the act of building.

    Give the collar some room.

For styling, we would let the silhouette do the work. A cropped trouser or an adjustable cargo hem can leave the straps visible. Wider denim creates another option, allowing the collar to appear as you move. Charcoal, washed black or muted olive would keep the outfit quiet enough for those proportions to register.

The point is to make space around the shoe. Its height is already a strong statement; the rest of the outfit can give it breathing room.

    The pair in focus.

Virgil Abloh and the Air Force 1: He Made Us Look Again

    IKNO EDITORIAL · Published

IKNO / The people behind the pairs / 01

    VIRGIL MADE US LOOK AGAIN.

The Air Force 1 was already an icon. Virgil Abloh made its seams, its history—and the people who wore it—impossible to overlook.

SAME SHOE. DIFFERENT STORY.   SAME SHOE. DIFFERENT STORY.

Before the quotation marks, the zip ties and the runway, there was a person who understood what happens when an object moves between worlds. Virgil Abloh was the son of Ghanaian immigrants, raised around Chicago. He studied engineering and architecture, made music and clothes, and learned to read streetwear, art and luxury as parts of one conversation. That background matters here. The Air Force 1 was never only a blank white canvas: basketball players, neighborhoods and generations of wearers had already given it a life far beyond the court.

Abloh did not invent that cultural journey. His contribution was to make a familiar shoe speak in another register, then carry it into spaces that once kept sneaker culture at the door. This is the story of the person as much as the product. [Virgil in conversation] · [Museum biography]

    01 / The method

A shoe you already knew. A way of seeing you didn’t.

In 2017, the Nike and Off-White project The Ten took recognizable sneakers apart visually and invited the viewer to notice their construction. On Abloh’s Air Force 1, the familiar silhouette became a field for exposed details, industrial cues and language printed where shoe design normally asks us to look past the making. The effect was immediate: you could recognize the Force from across the room and still find something new at arm’s length.

He worked by quotation, interruption and context. It was a designer’s way of asking who gets to call an object finished and who gets to change its meaning. The High Museum’s survey of his work shows the same method spanning fashion, art, furniture and music. The AF1 made that inquiry wearable. [High Museum]

THE POINT WASN’T TO ERASE THE ORIGINAL.
IT WAS TO OPEN IT UP.
    02 / Beyond the product

He built stages, not just shoes.

Abloh’s runway work helps explain why these sneakers landed with such force. In his Off-White “Temperature” show in 2017, he invited artist Jenny Holzer to project poems about refugees; the show placed fashion in a wider conversation about crisis and responsibility. When he became artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear in 2018, his first show turned the runway into a vivid, public statement about who belonged in that room.

These were different projects, and an AF1 was not the centerpiece of every runway. The connection is his practice: collaborators, music, visual art and street references moved together instead of waiting for permission from a single discipline. That is why a sneaker could later make sense inside the vocabulary of a French fashion house. [High Museum: runway work]

    03 / The crossing

    The Force enters Louis Vuitton.

Abloh’s Louis Vuitton and Nike Air Force 1 brought two powerful visual languages into one object. Nike’s basketball-born profile remained legible; Louis Vuitton’s materials, patterns and workshop tradition entered the frame. It was more than a logo swap. The collaboration asked what happens when a shoe shaped by street culture occupies luxury’s most protected space.

The shoes were shown in the context of his Louis Vuitton menswear work, and a 200-pair auction followed in January and February 2022. The pair and pilot case shown below represent that later chapter, distinct from his earlier Off-White Nike releases. The price and scarcity of these objects also make a real tension visible: an idea can welcome more people into a conversation even when its most collectible objects remain out of reach. 04 / What remains

He kept the door open for someone else.

The work was personal in ways a product photograph cannot hold. Abloh shared resources through Free Game, a project offering young creators practical tools and a route into industries that often feel closed. His career showed a kid with several interests that they did not have to choose only one. He also used his position to invite other artists and image makers into the work.

Virgil Abloh died in 2021. No single sneaker sums up his life. The Force does, however, reveal a through line: take something the world thinks it understands, respect the people who brought it this far, and ask what new meaning is possible when more voices enter the room. At IKNO, that is why we return to the Air Force 1. Same shoe. Different story. [Free Game] · [Figures of Speech]

The Air Force 1 ’01 continues its return with a release that pushes the revived shape beyond straightforward archival colorways.

Nike’s Air Force 1 Low “Menta and White” is scheduled to release through SNKRS on September 22, 2026. Identified by style code JA0248-001, the pair will retail for $140.

    The material is the message.

Color-blocked leather is paired with deliberately crackled textures, giving the shoe the appearance of a pair pulled from storage after two decades. The finish reads almost black in certain light before its dark Menta tone begins to show through.

That aged surface treatment feels especially appropriate on the ’01 silhouette—a version defined by the leaner, lower profile associated with early-2000s Air Force 1s.

    Not restored.
    Reintroduced.

This is not simply another vintage-inspired treatment applied to the modern AF1 shape. Nike is using the returning ’01 construction as a foundation for new material experiments, allowing the sneaker’s past and present to occupy the same pair.

    The IKNO take.

The Air Force 1 has survived by remaining recognizable while constantly absorbing new stories, materials and cultural references. The Cracked Leather edition respects the proportions collectors remember without treating the 2001 version like a museum piece.

The ’01 rollout is not slowing down. It is beginning to show what this revived shape can become.

  • Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1

Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1 Low “University Red and White”: From the Inner Circle to the Streets

A red-and-white Terror Squad Air Force 1 once reserved for Fat Joe is finally getting a public release.

Some Air Force 1s become important because everybody had them.

Others become important because almost nobody could.

The Terror Squad Air Force 1 belongs to the second category.

Long before collaborations became a weekly part of sneaker culture, Fat Joe and his Terror Squad circle were connected to some of the most elusive Air Force 1s of the early 2000s — pairs made for the crew rather than the general public.

Now another piece of that history is stepping outside the inner circle.

The Terror Squad x Nike Air Force 1 Low “University Red and White” officially releases September 9, 2026, bringing one of Fat Joe’s previously exclusive colorways to the public for the first time. Nike itself describes the colorway as one that was originally exclusive to Fat Joe.

For Air Force 1 collectors, that distinction matters.

    This isn’t simply another red-and-white AF1.

    It comes with a story.

FROM BRONX EXCLUSIVITY TO PUBLIC RELEASE

Fat Joe’s relationship with the Air Force 1 stretches back decades.

During the early 2000s, Terror Squad-branded AF1s became part of an era when artist exclusives and friends-and-family sneakers could develop almost mythical status. The shoes weren’t sitting on shelves waiting to be discovered. They were seen on artists, members of the crew and people close enough to the movement to get access.

That scarcity became part of their identity.

The connection has survived long enough for Nike and Terror Squad to begin bringing that history to a much wider audience. Recent Terror Squad releases have transformed what was once essentially insider sneaker culture into something collectors can actually buy.

The University Red and White edition pushes that story forward.

The pair first surfaced publicly years before its eventual release, including on Fat Joe himself, and after a long wait it finally has an official retail date.

In other words, the pair that used to be for the inner circle is finally outside.

    THE SHOE

Terror Squad Air Force 1 University Red and White top view
Terror Squad Air Force 1 University Red and White heel with TS and JC embroidery

Visually, Terror Squad doesn’t need to reinvent the Air Force 1.

    That’s part of what works.

The shoe starts with a white leather base before University Red takes over the overlays and additional elements of the upper. A red rubber outsole anchors the colorway underneath, while the white midsole keeps the traditional AF1 structure intact.

But the important details are toward the back.

The familiar “TS” embroidery appears on the lateral heel, immediately identifying the pair with Terror Squad.

Then there is “JC” embroidery at the heel, referencing Joseph Cartagena and Fat Joe’s longtime Joey Crack nickname. Nike specifically calls out both the TS and JC embroidery as tributes to the Terror Squad legacy.

Those aren’t decorative details added simply to make another collaboration recognizable.

They’re the connection between this release and the Terror Squad Air Force 1 lineage that came before it.

WHY TERROR SQUAD AND THE AIR FORCE 1 FIT

Terror Squad Air Force 1 University Red and White side profile

The Air Force 1 has always had a relationship with New York that goes beyond footwear.

And Fat Joe’s relationship with the silhouette isn’t something created for a modern collaboration campaign.

That’s why a Terror Squad AF1 feels different from a celebrity name simply being attached to an existing sneaker.

    The history was already there.

Nike’s official campaign for this release leans into that connection as well. Recent campaign imagery features Fat Joe and his daughter around the Bronx, keeping the presentation rooted in the borough associated with Joe and the Terror Squad story.

    That setting makes sense.

The Air Force 1 became part of New York’s visual language long before sneaker collaborations became the industry they are today. Terror Squad’s version represents a particular chapter of that history — hip-hop, exclusivity, personal pairs and sneakers that gained reputations before most people ever had a chance to own them.

    THE IKNO TAKE

The strongest thing about the University Red and White Terror Squad AF1 isn’t complexity.

    It’s continuity.

Nike hasn’t buried the Air Force 1 underneath an elaborate concept. The red-and-white blocking is straightforward enough that, without the embroidery, the shoe could almost pass for a classic two-tone AF1.

    Then you see the TS.

    Then the JC.

    And the entire meaning changes.

For people who remember when Terror Squad AF1s were the kind of sneakers you saw in photographs, videos or on somebody with access you didn’t have, a public release changes the equation.

That’s what makes this pair interesting.

It’s not trying to recreate the early 2000s.

It’s taking something from that period and allowing another generation to participate in it.

From artist-only pairs to sneaker history — and now from sneaker history to the street.

    01 / THE SURFACE

    Texture sets
    the tone.

The black upper makes the snakeskin pattern the first detail to investigate. Instead of a loud color block, this pair uses texture to give the Force a sharper identity. Purple at the collar and outsole frames the dark upper, while the white midsole keeps the familiar AF1 profile readable.

That balance is the attraction: a shoe that holds its shape from a distance and reveals its character as you move closer.

    02 / THE TRIBUTE

    A small mark.
    A lasting signature.

The purple Kobe emblem at the outer heel gives the design a clear signature. Against the black upper, it becomes a small but decisive focal point: a connection between the everyday Air Force 1 and Kobe Bryant’s legacy.

The snake language belongs to that story. Our artwork carries it into the surrounding scene; the actual shoe stays at the center of the edit.

    03 / THE IKNO TAKE

    Let the pair
    do the talking.

This is a strong anchor for a dark rotation: straight black trousers, a washed tee and one restrained purple accent. The upper already brings the pattern. Giving it space makes the details easier to appreciate.

For IKNO, the appeal is the meeting of an enduring street silhouette and a personal basketball legacy. The Force becomes a canvas for remembrance, with enough restraint to live beyond the display shelf.
